The vertical village. Expect to climb. The beach is pebbly, the boutiques overpriced, and the views from your terrace at dusk will make you forgive all of it. Book a hotel with a shuttle boat.
Cool mountain air, Villa Rufolo’s gardens, and the Ravello Festival in summer. No sea swimming without a 20-minute descent. Perfect if your ideal day is a book, a view, and a three-course lunch.
The locals’ coast. Fewer tourists, genuine restaurants (try Kasai for fish), a west-facing aspect for sunsets, and enough quiet to hear the sea from your bed. Underrated.
The only flat ground on the coast. Ferry terminal, cathedral square, paper mills in the valley behind, and the easiest jumping-off point for Capri and the other islands.
The longest beach, the most relaxed vibe, and significantly lower prices. Families and long-stay travellers choose here when the glamour towns feel claustrophobic.
One bakery (Sal De Riso) put this town on the map. Tiny, unpretentious, excellent pasta, and a 10-minute walk to Ravello’s staircase. The insider’s base.
Late May and the first half of June: the wisteria is still blooming, the sea is swimmable, and the SS163 coast road has not yet turned into a car park. September after the 15th is equally good—hotels drop rates, the light softens, and you can get a table at Lo Scoglio without begging. Easter week and August are objectively miserable for logistics.

Positano for drama and energy, Ravello for tranquillity. If forced to pick one, Positano—you came for the spectacle, and it delivers. But book a hotel in the upper village with pool access so you are not hostage to the beach stairs.
Late May or mid-September. June is fine but increasingly crowded. July is hot and traffic-choked. August is locals-on-holiday chaos. April is lovely but the sea is cold and some restaurants remain shuttered.
Ferries and private boats, definitively. The coast road is a single lane in many sections, parking is predatory, and the stress of driving will ruin an otherwise perfect lunch. Arrive by private transfer, then go by sea.
Many are not. The coast is entirely vertical. When booking, we prioritize properties with dedicated luggage porters or road-level reception areas to ensure your arrival is seamless rather than exhausting.
